2018, 7th Colchester’s 40th anniversary year, saw a huge multi-section Group Camp held at Thiftwood Scout Campsite in Brentwood, Essex, including almost 80 Beavers, Cubs & Scouts! Across the weekend the Cubs & Scouts slept outdoors in tents, with the Scouts spending their 2nd night suspended from trees in hammocks! Meanwhile the Beavers slept in their lodges, literally (!) as they shared bunk beds in Thiftwood’s purpose-built wooden hutches. The Group also had use of its own Village-type HQ for meetings, cooking, meals and of course evening hot chocolate…
The weekend offered a huge array of outdoor activities including climbing, axe throwing, cata-splat, water pedlarz, problem solving, assault course, demolition, volleyball, orienteering, and the hugely popular sledge-like cresta run!! Luckily, the weather was fantastic, even calling for a cool-down water fight – including some of the leaders. As always, the Young People got involved with meal times and helped with clearing up etc. Overall, 2018’s Group Camp was very enjoyable and certainly a Camp Site to be repeated; no camp would be complete with a visit to the tuckshop, a blanket badge and of course, a site-wide Campfire on Saturday evening!
